We all got terribly sick on this trip and 75% of the company was out for a few weeks after we got back with fever, so...worth it.

I don't wanna. 

Ok, fine.

This type of spending in tech is totally unsustainable. Its a classic tragedy of the commons. Company X offers perks like six figure salaries + unlimited food bars + unlimited massages, so Company Y has to offer the same package to stay competitive. Unfortunately for Company Y, Company X is Google and has basically unlimited spend.

Even the most successful startups light money on fire to chase scale.
